The Benefits of Otter.ai for Journalists

When coming to university and was assigned projects for my journalism projects, I would always use Apple’s “Voice Memo” app. Until I was introduced to “Otter.ai” and it completely changed the game!

What is Otter.AI and What does it offer?

Otter.ai is a website that takes audio and transcripts it, as it is being recorded. However, the website has so many more features that make the app perfect for journalists.

Otter.ai provides transcripts of the audio you record on it. Along with this, the transcripts are completely editable. Since transcriptions are not always clear you can edit them.

You are also able to edit the names of the speakers, this can come in handy when referring back to the interviews and you cannot listen to them out loud or in headphones. You are able to view the transcription and can see who is saying what.

Along with this, if you are unable to remember parts of the interview or event, Otter.ai gives you a summary of what was said during the interview. Along with that, it gives you a detailed outline of what was said in your transcription.

Otter.ai is also the perfect tool when you know you need to do more research and are not sure what to use, they provide you with a list of action items you can follow up with, to figure out what you need to do next.

Otter.ai also has a feature called “Otter” that functions almost like ChatGPT, where you can ask Otter any questions about previous conversations you’ve had in your account and Otter will answer them.

Otter.ai also allows you to search for words within the conversations you have recorded on the website and as a whole.

Otter.ai is also accessible through an app on your phone, and I have only touched on some of the very helpful resources they have. If you want to learn more about it you can visit this article.
